Disneyana Auction Unearths Rare Song of the South Items

Last night marked the end of the JustKidsNostalgia.com Disneyana auction, which showcased hundreds of very rare Disneyana items, including several fromSong of the South. Among the most notable prices realized: a 1946 Six Sheet movie poster ($1,281.85); 1946 Three Sheet movie poster ($1,179.51); 1946 Campaign Book ($631.56); and a 1956 Six Sheet movie poster ($584.43).

While the theatrical posters were way out of my league, I was very fortunate to obtain three publicity photo sets, totaling 26 photos. These rarely-seen photographs were taken directly from Disney Key Book albums (reference guides used by the studio), and include shots of the original opening credits of the film, animators behind the scenes actually working on the film, and several publicity shots of Glenn Leedy, Bobby Driscoll, and Luana Patten. Of course I will be posting them on this website in the Archives section in the coming weeks, so keep a lookout!

New Splash Mountain 15th Anniversary Pins Released

On October 22, Disneyland Resort released four new Splash Mountain 15th Anniversary pins, two of which depict the Brer characters. The first pin, entitled “Paddle Wheel,” depicts Brer Rabbit aboard the Zip-A-Dee Lady, the large showboat seen at the end of Splash Mountain. What’s cool about this pin is that you can turn the paddle wheel! This pin retails for $12.50 and is limited to an edition of 1500.

The second pin, entitled “The Drop,” depicts Brer Rabbit, Brer Bear and Brer Fox all plummeting down the Splash Mountain plume, while Brer Vulture (a.k.a. one of the Boothill Boys) looks on. This same scene is pictured on many Splash Mountain publicity items from the early 90’s. This pin also has a neat feature, the log slides up and down. This pin retails for $10.50 and is also limited to an edition of 1500.

The other two pins, entitled “The Descent” and “The End”, depict Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and Goofy. They are Open Edition pins and retail for $6.50 each. These pins are available at the Emporium, La Mascarade d’Orleans, the Plaza Pavilion carts, Greetings from California, P.T. Flea Market, World of Disney, and Mickey in Paradise.

Disneyland’s Splash Mountain Celebrates 15 Years

July 17 marked the 15th anniversary of Disneyland’s Splash Mountain, the popular water ride featuring Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox, Brer Bear, and all the other critters. Two limited edition items were issued to commemorate the event. The first item, released on July 1, was a commemorative watch featuring Brer Rabbit in front of Splash Mountain among briars that spell out “15”. The accompanying artwork is signed by the artist, Eric Scales. I was honored to be able to meet Eric in person when I picked up my watch. Special thanks to Andy Knobloch for making that possible! The watch was limited to an edition of only 15 and cost $200.

The second item, released on July 11, was a pin featuring Brer Bear hanging from the sapling trap (shown on right). His arm holding his hat is movable. The pin was limited to an edition of 1500 and cost $10.50.

New Splash Mountain Musical Snow Globe

A new Splash Mountain collectible is available at Disneyland: the new Splash Mountain Musical Snow Globe, featuring the bodacious Brer Rabbit and Song of the South‘s Academy Award-winning tune “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah.” When shaken, the globe fills up with glitter (representing the “splash”), and a button under the base can be pressed to hear the song:

Above the globe sits Chickapin Hill, and below the globe is the base of Splash Mountain. This item retails for $12.00 and is available at The Emporium on Disneyland’s Main Street.

To date, the only other item commercially released by Disney that plays “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah” was a pin, released in December of 2002. And, the only other time our Brer pals have had their very own snow globe was back in 1961.

Fake Memorabilia Alert – “De Tar Baby” Alarm Clock

It has recently come to my attention that De Tar Baby Alarm Clock I had originally estimated to date to 1946, is a fake. The illustration used for the picture of the Tar Baby comes from the cover of The Wonderful Tar Baby, published in 1946. The clock, however, is a Gabriel model Lux clock dating from about 1971. So, at the very earliest, this clock would date to 1971, long after I believe Disney would have chosen to use such a clock face. At least one other clock model has surfaced with the fake “De Tar Baby” face, so it isn’t just limited to the Gabriel model.

According to ClockHistory.com, putting fake faces on clocks is a very common (and dishonest) occurrence, especially faces depicting Black Americana. I myself purchased one of these under the false pretense that it was an original memorabilia item, but it’s a hard lesson to learn that there ARE fakes out there, so please be careful guys! I will keep mine, nevertheless, for historical reference. Thanks to the several people who brought this to my attention.

Limited Edition Brer Gang Framed Pin

On February 1, the first Mickey’s Parti Gras event was held at Disney’s Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World. There were several limited edition pins released at the event, including “The Brer Gang,” featuring Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox, and Brer Bear. The scene pictured is adapted from the Laughing Place sequence, with added confetti and beads hanging from the trees. Even Brer Rabbit’s leash itself is a string of beads. There is a lever on the back of the frame that makes all three characters move. This framed pin retailed for $125.00 and was limited to an edition of 50. Full details.

New Splash Mountain Pin Released

Walt Disney World has released a new Splash Mountain pin featuring Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox, and Brer Bear sitting in a Splash Mountain log, looking mighty dry and happy. They must be blissfully unaware of the wet fate that will soon befall them! The pin’s design is identical to the figurine used both atop the new Splash Mountain Note Holder as well as a Splash Mountain ornament which was released over the 2002 holidays. This pin was released on January 18, 2003, and is part of the “Four Parks, One World” pin series. It retails for $6.50 and has been declared Open Edition.

New Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah Magical Musical Moments Pin Released

On December 1, the Disney Store released the Disney Magical Musical Moments pin series. Each pin represents a famous Disney song and plays that song! Among these, pin #81 is Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah, which features Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox, and Brer Bear. Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah won an Oscar for Best Song in 1948.

This pin is the most expensive of the series, retailing for $8.50. All the other pins in the series retail for $4.50. This pin (Pin #81) has also been confirmed to exist in four different background colors: Brown (#81A), Green (#81B), Pink (#81C), and Red (#81D).

These pins are available exclusively at Disney Stores. Thanks to Mark Kratzner of the Yahoo Song of the South Enthusiasts Group for notifying us of this new pin.

Brer Rabbit and Brer Bear Appear on New Disney State Pins

On August 4, Disneyland Resort released 50 pins depicting all 50 states. Among them is Brer Rabbit, who appears on the Louisiana State Pin, and Brer Bear, who appears on the Georgia State Pin. These pins were also later released at the Walt Disney World Resort on September 24. It’s a shame Brer Fox didn’t make it this time around. Each pin is open edition, and retails for $8.50.
