Year c.1952-1970s
Country United States
Description Set of 5 cloth stuffed dolls hand-made by Noel Dwelley Richards of Fort Pierce, Florida between the 1950's and 1970's. She copyrighted this design in 1952 under the title "Negro man and animals". The set consists of Uncle Remus, Brer Bear, Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox, and The Tar Baby. The dolls were directly inspired by the Walt Disney film "Song of the South" and were very popular items, sold by her son Nick Richards at The Emporium, an antique shop previously located at 301 S. US Highway 1, Fort Pierce, FL.
Manufactured by Noel Dwelley Richards
Variations As each doll was hand-made over several decades, no two dolls are the same. Slight variations exist, including different size/types of buttons, facial features, etc.
Notes While not technically official Disney memorabilia, these were sold in significant quantity over many years and are the earliest known stuffed animals directly tied to the film. For more background and information on these dolls, read my news article written in 2019.
Suggested Value USD $300-400 (set)
